BTS Health Digest #32- My Journey to the UK - Dr. Ogechi Sylvia Eze.

And How I found Success as a GP.

Migrating to the UK as a medical doctor is not as straightforward as many people think it to be. On paper, is simple as writing IELTS or OET, take PLAB 1 and 2, register with the General Medical Council (GMC), get a job and you are sorted!

A lot goes on behind the scenes that a lot of persons are not privy to. The depression, debts incurred from exams, the loneliness sometimes, and the harrowing process of finding a job before facing the tough challenge of settling into the system. I had the opportunity to chat with Dr. Ogechi Sylvia Eze a couple of months back and she bared it all.

Dr. Ogechi Sylvia Eze shared her journey of leaving Nigeria to pursue her dreams in the UK healthcare system. She faced numerous challenges, including failing her PLAB exams, struggling to find a job, and dealing with clinical depression. Despite these obstacles, she persevered and eventually found success as a general practitioner. Her story highlights the importance of resilience, determination, and the support of loved ones. This conversation highlights the challenges and experiences of a Nigerian doctor who moved to the UK. She faced difficulties with immigration, depression, and discrimination, but persevered and achieved success in their medical career. She shared advice for other doctors considering a move to the UK and emphasized the importance of resilience and adding additional qualifications. We also discussed her role as a governor in the NHS and the importance of community engagement.
