The title of this newsletter is incidentally a tweet by @MaataVermillion on X (formerly twitter) on 20/02/24. This is something I am fairly familiar with, doctors and healthcare professionals asking for what opportunities lie outside clinical medicine.
As healthcare professionals, we possess a good breadth and depth of knowledge and more importantly, transferable skills that can support us outside clinical medicine. Reading through the replies on the post, there were several suggestions like getting into the Non-Governmental Organization space and Clinical Research amongst others. Last month, my last newsletter was on transitioning into Project Management and in today’s newsletter, I will discuss another area that healthcare professionals can consider, and that is Business Analysis.
Making the switch from the healthcare industry to business analysis can be a fulfilling professional move, with new challenges and growth prospects. To accomplish organizational objectives, business analysis entails determining needs, developing solutions, and encouraging change. Business analysts are essential in bridging the communication gap between technical teams and stakeholders, resulting in successful project delivery and achievement of business goals.
Who is a Business Analyst?
A business analyst's job description includes a wide range of duties, such as obtaining and evaluating requirements, drafting business cases, leading stakeholder workshops, and establishing the goals and scope of projects. Business analysts serve as a point of contact for technical teams and business stakeholders, converting business needs into technical specifications and making sure that solutions meet organizational objectives.

To excel as a business analyst, certain skills are essential. They include:

Globally recognized certifications such as the Certified Business Analysis Professional (CBAP) and Project Management Professional (PMP) demonstrate proficiency and expertise in business analysis practices and methodologies. Membership in organizations such as the International Institute of Business Analysis (IIBA) provides access to resources, networking opportunities, and professional development.
Internships & Career Prospects
Internship opportunities serve as valuable stepping stones for beginners in business analysis to gain practical experience and exposure to real-world projects. Seeking internships with consulting firms, IT companies, or financial institutions can provide hands-on experience and insights into various industries and business processes.
Business analysts can work across a wide range of industries, including healthcare, finance, information technology, retail, and manufacturing. Career opportunities for business analysts span from entry-level positions to senior roles, with potential career paths leading to roles such as project manager, senior business analyst, product manager, or business architect.
Salary Expectations
Global salary expectations for business analysts vary depending on factors such as experience, location, and industry. In the UK, entry-level business analysts can expect salaries starting from £25,000 to £35,000 per year, with experienced professionals earning upwards of £60,000 annually.

To become a business analyst, aspiring professionals can follow clear steps to transition into the field:
