In this episode of the podcast, I sat with Dr. Leah Ajayi as shares her journey from Nigeria to the UK, navigating the challenges of medical training, exams, and career progression as an International Medical Graduate (IMG). Her story is one of resilience, determination, and an unwavering passion for medicine.

A Passion for Medicine from the Start

Dr. Ajayi’s journey began in Nigeria, where her interest in medicine was sparked at an early age. Gaining admission to medical school was a significant challenge, requiring not only academic excellence but also strategic connections. However, her persistence paid off, and she thrived in medical school.

Initially drawn to pediatrics, Dr. Ajayi later found her calling in internal medicine. Her experiences in the Nigerian healthcare system, coupled with the challenges she faced, influenced her decision to pursue opportunities abroad. The journey to the UK was not straightforward, requiring her to pass the PLAB exams and navigate the complexities of transitioning to a new healthcare system.

Navigating the UK Healthcare System as an IMG

Starting as a doctor in the UK came with its own set of challenges. Dr. Ajayi encountered scrutiny, the pressure to prove herself, and the need to adapt quickly. However, she found support in her first job, where she was given opportunities to learn and grow.

One of the biggest hurdles was preparing for the MRCP PACES exam, a rigorous assessment that required both clinical expertise and strategic preparation. Recognizing the struggles that IMGs face, she co-founded the Ace Academy, a platform designed to support IMGs in their exam preparation and career development. Through this initiative, she continues to give back to the medical community by sharing her knowledge and experiences.

The Balancing Act: Medicine, Family, and Personal Well-being

Dr. Ajayi emphasizes the importance of time management, self-awareness, and prioritization in achieving career success while maintaining personal well-being. She highlights the challenges of balancing a demanding medical career with family life, stressing the significance of communication and planning ahead.

Self-care is a recurring theme in her journey. She acknowledges the pressure to meet high expectations in medicine but reminds aspiring doctors that they cannot please everyone. Prioritizing mental and physical health is essential for longevity in the profession.

Key Takeaways from Dr. Ajayi’s Journey

  • Resilience is key: Overcoming challenges in medical training requires perseverance.

  • Advocate for yourself: Speak up and make your contributions known in the workplace.

  • Seek support: Community and mentorship play a crucial role in an IMG’s success.

  • Time management matters: Plan ahead, set clear goals, and maintain balance.

  • Self-care is non-negotiable: Burnout is real—take care of yourself.
